๐ New FREE Educational Resource for Schools โ Pollinator Protectors! ๐
The British Beekeepersโ Association (BBKA), with support from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), is delighted to launchย Pollinator Protectors: Monitoring the Yellow-legged Asian Hornetย โ a fully resourced, classroom-based citizen science project for schools.
This engaging programme helps pupils explore:
Unit 1: Introduces pollination, pollinators, ecosystems and invasive species, with a focus on the threat posed by the Yellow-legged Asian hornet.
Units 2 & 3: Guide pupils in building and safely deploying monitoring stations, and collecting observational data.
Unit 4: Develops IT, data analysis and presentation skills to interpret monitoring results and draw conclusions.
Unit 5: A group-based investigation into invasive species in the UK, allowing pupils to research and present their findings.
Designed with busy teachers in mind, Pollinator Protectors provides a structured, low-preparation, high-impact project that is ideal for the post-SATs transition period in Year 6, while remaining flexible enough for home educators, secondary schools, and SEN settings.
Pupils will learn how monitoring and observation support national efforts led by the National Bee Unit (NBU) to help protect pollinators and wider ecosystems from the Yellow-legged Asian hornet.
